When I moved in with my husband I had a funny insight about styles of life. I was loading balled up socks into the bottom drawer of my bureau and it stopped him dead in amused incredulousness. “Why was I putting socks there? Everyone puts their socks in the top drawer.” He was actually in shock about this. I just laughed.
I love my way
It made the most sense to me to have bottom parts of my human gear in the bottom drawer, and top parts at the top. I had thought it through long ago and preferred “mirroring” my environment to inverting it. Plus, it just made more sense to me to do “the hard part first” by bending down early in the process of getting dressed. It was intentional, and apparently, in the land of socks, unconventional.
Exercise, then ease
Another time, after reflecting on Ram Dass‘ description of death as “it is absolutely safe, like taking off a tight shoe,” I had another silly, philosophical, and wildly expansive sock-related experience. I’ll tell you about that another time.
