Dream On Drum Kit: What’s Your Rhythm?

Drums Phone markup art by Elizabeth Matteson

Ever feel like you need a new timing or approach? One that hasn’t  been done quite yet?

So, the other night I have this dream that I’m back on a drum kit. (You probably didn’t know I used to play as a kid)

And someone is telling me I shouldn’t play the Hi Hat. They sound like they know what they are talking about, but I have no idea who it is…

So, of course, I start jamming, and play the crap out of that Hi Hat cymbal with some Tom Tom (not snare – you drummers know why I say this – and it’s my dream after all!).  By the end of this dreamy rock-out, I was making something akin to my kind of music.

I tell you this because our minds and dreams can be fun – and sometimes even have puns – like Cymbals & Symbols.

And, just like in dreams, some of us ‘hear’ thoughts telling us what we should do, and how we should do it. To be fair, sometimes these directives are right: standard practices help you ‘fit in’ or write a song like everyone else does. Maybe even like a master…

But sometimes these internal edicts just get in the way of playing.

So, when it comes to your dreams – all the many kinds of your dreams –I hope you leave yourself a little room to play today and rock on with your bad self.

Your rhythm, your groove, is just right for you.

with sounds of gratitude,

Elizabeth
