The Power of Fiction

The animated fable “Song of the Sea” by Tomm Moore is one such powerful piece of fiction… and clearly suitable to watch with little children. Highly recommended. Image copyright owners.

The tagline of this site is “one paragraph a day, truth or fiction.”  In the world of meaning, fiction is often felt more powerfully than truth.  Have you ever experienced a great story, movie, or dream that altered the way you view the world (and consequently how you experience the daily stuff of your life)?   I know that I have reworked the under-narrative of my life several times after witnessing great art.  I also find that when I focus only on the mundane world of “truth” like news, facts, and daily events, that I feel a little rudderless and out-of-sorts.  But the experience of one wonderful story, especially the kind that doesn’t make perfect “sense” (like fairy tales and fables), and I feel restored; ready to participate in the flow of daily activity in a more meaningful and peaceful way.  I am grateful to the artists who bring this stuff into form for the rest of us.
