Today I’m writing about a web term¹ often used, but not always understood. “Content” is the text, images, photos, movies, or social postings that make up the non-navigational/non-advertising part of a website. Basically everything that can be considered the “guts” of the website is content. Yet original content, is something of note, because the majority of the web’s biggest bandwidth bears are serving up your— and other people’s content— and getting rich on it.
Think Google which searches through and presents links to other people’s stuff; Netflix which serves up shows and movies, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter… they all virtually devoid of their own original content, instead repackaging, reshaping your, and other people’s, creations and serving them up on their web properties². Not saying this is good or bad, as I use nearly all of these services too. But perhaps it is worth thinking about what you intend while sharing your “content.”
¹ Yeah, and this is my line of work: internet marketing. No ideas what to write about on the home front today, but hoping you find this useful.
² We’ll do this one another day
