My friend Alix, developed a metaphysical system* over a dozen years ago, that represents people in a simple, meaningful pattern in color. She spent several years researching, assigning, and interpreting color-scopes™ for thousands of people, and created a book, then a website where you can discover your own. There are 1,728 variations, and the visuals are simple and powerful. I’ve found that mine pops up in the oddest of places. But more on that below.
What is a color-scope™?
Each color represents a part of a person’s astrological chart: the ascendant (or rising sign) is the outer ring, the middle concentric ring represents one’s sun sign, and the center represents one’s natal moon. Each of the twelve signs has a unique color assigned to it that reflects the energy of the sign. I like to think of the combination as an metaphysical bullseye in color

Physics v Metaphysics
These two arts-sciences2 are valued by two different groups of people — as different from one another as liberals and maga-republicans. At first glance, rhere’s very little overlap, and very little cross-understanding, or desire to understand the other either. But in spiritual development (or maybe even just in garden-variety human development), metaphysics and academic physics are directly related to each other, although the metaphysical components of life usually get discounted as the ignorant, new-agey niece of the real thing. I’ve felt exactly the same way. I’m a science girl for sure when it comes to defining reality. Now I’m trying to tie in some deeper threads.
Because my life includes countless inexplicable mysteries along with wild piles of the unexpected, I’ve grown to lean more on metaphysics to understand myself and explain what I know from lived experience.
I’ve also always been shy to talk about the spiritual aspect of my experience, but it’s just all over me these days: mystery and wonder. The physics of my life has had to expand to include what feels like living in two completely different realities concurrently. I doubt I’m the only one who has experienced this, but perhaps I’m the only ‘ordinary’ person trying to explain it simply, without creating a new religion, or jumping off a bridge.
If I were a quantum physicist, I’d probably posit: YES, matter can be in two places at the same time, but it’s kind of a “flicker” and it requires an observer, which very well may be YOU at a farther-flung standpoint than you’ve ever known before.
While I can’t explain my understanding of physics like a trained scientist could, perhaps this little story can illustrate an everyday run-in with metaphysics, a wink from ‘my’ universe.4 I choose this one only because I have a photo.
Below is my little story that I emailed the creator of the system.
Hi Alix,
Remember the eclipse from a few weeks back? Well, it was a partial one here. But for some reason, leading up to it, it felt like it was going to be a really big deal to me personally. I couldn’t articulate why, it felt kind of important in a mysterious way, almost like it was happening because of, and for me. I didn’t mention this awareness to anyone because I didn’t think anyone would understand, or they’d lock me up!
Interestingly enough, my brother took a photo outside his house at the time the eclipse was at 90% and this was the photo he sent me. He presented the photo as a “bummer” that the eclipse didn’t look like anything, and didn’t even mention the apparent lens flare…
I wanted to tell you because I think your color-scopes are “right on.” I’ve never seen a lens flare with these colors before, even though (from my film-making BFA) I informally study them for fun.
Thanks for sharing color-scope with me. It’s a real “thing.” ? -Elizabeth
What I didn’t elaborate on here, but will attempt to in a future post, is the “living in two places at once” experience I’ve been having for 5+ months now (and still telling the tale, raising kids and carrying on with a job, even if wobbly). I think the best way I can explain it is to gently reference:
- the work by Joseph Campbell of the conscious and unconscious/archetypal realms
- the native American role of a shaman
- the internal experience of forerunners of well-known religions (Buddha, Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed, etc.)
- for fun, the upside down in the show “Stranger Things”
More to come. Thanks for reading this far.

* Color-scope™ is a trademark owned by Alix Toland.
1. You can find color-scopes™ with interpretations of hundreds of historical figures here
2. I call these both “art-sciences” because arguably, there is a human creative element in all modern physics, whether the artistry of a grand thought experiment, or the role of the observer and intention in quantum mechanics. These are pieces of understanding we might not pursue without creative human questions driving them.
3. One of my favorite books of all time is Art & Physics by Leonard Schlain
4. I just started watching “The 3 Body Problem” on Netflix, so forgive the overt nod! I love good sci-fi.
