This is about putting the marketing cart before the horse with Human Design, and it apparently working.1
Oh yes, and moonlighting…
And examining why anyone would put pressure on themselves to produce for commerce.
HD: High Definition or Otherwise?
Have you noticed this new trend in marketing? It’s usually for classes, trainings, meet ups, and other community building or knowledge-based products. This marketing can feel very personal and is usually micro-targeted to like minded people using tech platforms like META and Google using targeted segmenting—or just an organically grown email list.
This Human Design-informed marketing appears to push/pull people2 to buy stuff via channels like email marketing, social media, and/or website landing pages. This marketing style often includes highly personal stories and photos or videos of the person offering the experience, and usually features a subscription model, event, or course-based buy signal (called in industry jargon a CTA3).
I’ve been noticing increased communications from many individuals and groups utilizing this approach, which appears to be HD4-informed, and it’s fascinating and perhaps effective in commerce. What is curious to me though, is that some (but not all) of these practitioners are selling something that doesn’t exist exist, and then they produce the content or training program – on demand – to fulfill the orders that are made.
This is very different from a more classic, artist/artisan creative model of:
- Crafting something ‘just because’ (inspiration? need? for fun? to serve? to solve a problem?)
- Developing and testing it
- Noticing feedback and results
- Improving it for better performance over time along
- Selling the product or service again, better realized, unique to the moment, and perhaps better-crafted.
- OR getting commissioned to do the above.
I’m not sure which is better, but I’m pretty much but seeing that the traditional model of just making things — for the love of it, then selling it — is more my personal style. Of course, it’s important to always improve your skills in your field too, and this on-demand model appears to be ubiquitous nowadays5 so I feel like I need to at least understand it.
So, why put Demand on oneself?
So, I can’t knock this on-demand sales technique. About 20 years ago I wrote my first book treatment, which consisted of a a cool snappy Title and a short treatment and sent that to a handful of publishers. One got back to me with a “YES! please show us more.”
Annnnnd, I totally choked. I also didn’t have time to write the book either. I was waiting tables, in Coach U training, and inadvertently growing my side hustle: web design & SEO.
Quite frankly, I also lost interest in producing the book after I found out there was pressure on me to write it. Oh well! That ship had sailed! 6
Historically, my best work doesn’t come because of others’ interest and subsequent pressure to produce. It usually come from something I have realized, or have insight about, or want to illuminate, then respecting my natural urge to express myself in material or digital form. This is what first made me craft something FOR ME. Then selling it (if it is saleable, often it is not) becomes job #2.7
So my work these days is usually produced with no strings attached, no subscriptions requested, just for the joy of it. Marketing is my day job, which I also enjoy, as long as not too much IT.
Right now I’m moonlighting as a writer, albeit mostly in the morning time! And here you are! Thanks for reading this odd weaving of art in digital form.
And thanks for hanging with me here for a quick minute before I launch into a clearly defined ‘call to action’ in the form of King Harvest’s song Dancing in the Moonlight, performed by two artists, with two unique approaches. Get yourself up and dance before Part II of this post.
dance break for ya – it’s a long post
Now, how about projecting a new Project (oh yes, this is political)
Unfortunately, Project 20258, a conservative think tank’s plan for a Trump presidency now has a chance to be realized with an odd cast of characters, oddly oppressive and religious edicts, and a circus-like cabinet. What’s been so challenging for me is the anxiety my body feels and the flightiness of my mind when I contemplate these oppressive policies that could have very negative outcomes for women, minorities, LGBTQ folks, and all our kids for future generations.
So the challenge, as posed to me by a wise lady, is to use your imagination to imagine something better for 2025. I think she’s right. It’s time to project a better Project by conceiving of and writing down what you’d rather see happen via our US government in 2025. Then, get on making that happen by sharing your ideas with peaceful, creative and truly artful folk.
I’m aiming at peaceful, unifying protests, and resulting positive outcomes, a return to democratic sanity and yes, even bureaucratic institutions that support citizens… and love. How about you?
Question Prompt: What do you project for your project 2025, and does it include acceptance, respect and care of others without oppression?
- Hey techie bros, let’s not do this with AI. It’s bound to run the horse ragged. ↩︎
- Another piece about marketing “#2 style” 💩 to come soon. ↩︎
- CTA means in marketing lingo “call to action.”: ↩︎
- ↩︎
- Who could pass up a chance to use the word “nowadays”? Sheesh. ↩︎
- I have no regrets on this, only amusement. It taught me about putting the cart before the horse in a real-life way. ↩︎
- Ummm, this is just embarrassing #2 is sometimes not such a pleasant thing in the world of potty training or impolite society. ↩︎
- Read it if you can stomach it. I can’t seem to read the whole thing bc focused elsewhere. https://www.project2025.org ↩︎
Random footnote. Here’s another project I’ve been running online for over 20 years. It’s an idea I’m sure that’s been around a long time before that, and not ‘mine’ per se, I just put up and pay for a website and send out bumper-stickers to folks who want to join in the movement. It is all about being in relationship with the Earth, making a positive difference in our communities, practicing good things, and connecting with others by helping clean up natural areas.
