I find myself thinking more and more about what it really means to be a parent in a culture that holds business values in higher regard than the slow-grow of children. Efficiency, productivity, getting lots out of what you put little into, and achievement are all values that spawned from a business mindset, and permeate my everyday for sure. How can I fit in laundry and cooking between self-care and child rides? How can I put some magical stuff into a cheap-ingredient meal to make it seem like more? How can I exploit coupons and specials so I feel like I’ve gotten something for nothing? (And don’t get me started on Pinterest). Although these are all fine-enough approaches to life, they all seem to come directly from a capitalist mindset… and that way of thinking means only the few and finest truly thrive, and many are–or feel–lacking. I’m wondering what values we’d need to weave into our culture–and what questions we’d need to ask ourselves– to slow things down and bring harmony, joy and good growth to all?
