If you are like me and have many interests, maybe sometimes you go “all in” one on project, then drift off a bit toward the next thing, rinse and repeat. People often say to me, “but if you just did that one thing all the way, you’d be successful.”
Probably true, if success is what matters most to you. But I love launching things and the excitement of creating systems much more.
I know many folks seek passive income, but what really excites me is passive outcomes.
Meaning, what actions can I take today, or what systems can I set up, that will yield ongoing positive outcomes, regardless of my continuous attention?
I started LitterProject 20 years ago, after I found myself hooked on picking up litter on my marathon training runs. It felt good, so I put up a website for it, something else I was excited to be teaching myself. Perfect! Teach yourself web design by putting up a website for something fun. Yay!
This movement is still vital and making a difference today. I have very little time to put into posting about it, but LitterProject has a life of it’s own, which is the point. I still enjoy mailing out bumper stickers (to 38+ states, 6 countries and counting) and responding to emails from budding environmentalists and community activists, so it sustains my interest in mentoring/teaching too.
I am grateful for having taught myself webdesign in the early days of the internet, which made things like this possible. Now, I wonder what else is to come (thinking about AI now, but that’ll be another essay…)
In any case, I hope you’ll join us ?
The LitterProject Mission
1. to inspire 100,000 people to each pick up one piece of litter per day
2. to empower individuals and organizations to organize their own community improvement projects
3. to encourage enjoyment of the above
I also believe that people who take daily action for good, will do more and more.
So even if trash isn’t someone’s “thing,” picking up litter every day could be a gateway drug for taking daily positive action in another realm. Doing positive stuff is addictive and feels good, and is “catchy.”
Grooming the earth was the initial spark of this movement, and grooming is an act of care natural to the animal kingdom. It’s hard to disrespect something you groom daily and your love and knowledge of it grows along with your practice.
