Because my writing like this last post is often a long and complex weave of many ideas1 , I’m writing this short post as a palate cleanser.
I also try to post across time in a rhythm… short, long, feature, direct, complicated, simple, or at least I do this in my day job.
I’m working my outdoor work table today, and thinking about the beauty and functionality of sundials and compasses.
They are circular, include variable pointing, and possess function for finding one’s place in time and space respectively.

In order to put two posts up before my kids wake up, I’ve been rushing, and have circled around my outdoor table about 140° to avoid direct sun. I was bitten by what was likely a Lyme-bearing tick and am on antibiotics to avoid a flare up. Doxycycline kills Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses and gives the taker heightened sun sensitivity.
I always circle the table though, the sun creates glare on my screen, which makes it harder to see what I’m doing.
The images above are from playing in the sand a while back, and one from phone markup of a photo I took just now of my backyard work table, which is marked up, includes a yoga pose on one leg, shadows, and a magnetic woven knife which is present in a physical artwork now for sale.
Serious inquiries on that only.
I’ve upped the price and intend to rework it for a commissioned buyer – with documentation of process – included in the art piece|project. Here’s an earlier incarnation of the piece. And here’s another. The piece is not finished yet, but will be completed and delivered within 6-8 weeks for a US buyer. Price is currently $11,000. I intend to use the income from this piece to rent a studio.
So, what is happening here? In an “art sense”?
I’m converting this piece, mid-process into a commissioned work. Would you like to be one of the first to own a piece of art like this? Is conversion into a commissioned work even “a thing”2?
Now it is.
Made, destroyed, made again, then made by the artist specifically for a buyer. With process documented and annotated. Even better if buyer is anonymous, that would make, making this interesting and archival a challenge for me.
This is more than a piece of art, more than a custom work; it is a custom conceptual work. It is also a relationship across time and space, using materials with meaning, and resulting in someone owning a thing.
The piece is NOT digital, but this is how it will be documented. The piece’s dimensions will likely remain within dimensions of approximately 36″ x 36″, so the space it is to hang in, should be proportional – a personal space. Email me if you are interested in this little experiment. We can figure out logistics and payment after interest is expressed. You could even commission it as a gift for someone, then I’ll never know where it’s going.
- My posts intentionally include loose strands of oddly placed footnotes, links, and tags waving around in the breeze. You can’t pick up a thread if it’s perfectly tucked into a piece of fabric, then you are just ruining something complete. ↩︎
- da Vinci may have done this with The Mona Lisa, his studio purportedly painted multiple versions, some commissioned, some unpaid, some for himself. ↩︎
